Action on Canyon Lake Drive: 2/24 letter from HHA President

Hi Neighbors,

In the interest of being transparent, we have been working with The Lake Hollywood Coalition in order to make our neighborhoods adjacent to the sign safe and improve our quality of life by making a bold and decisive action.

The Blue “Scenic View” Directional Signs on Mulholland Hwy, from Ledgewood Drive to Canyon Lake Drive have been removed.  In August of 2015 The HHA Board made a motion that was approved and voted in.  It read:

“The Hollywoodland HHA supports the immediate removal of the blue directional “Scenic View” signs along Mulholland Hwy, to the unofficial Scenic Vista at Mulholland Hwy and Canyon Lake Drive, as a result of the response from Google Maps directing people to this area because of these signs.”

See below for Google’s response to our request to have the unofficial Scenic Vista, at Mulholland Hwy and Canyon Lake Drive, removed from their site.

Response from Google:

Thanks for reaching out to us.

We have reviewed your request for amendment of the “Hollywood Sign Overlook” listing. Not only are there “Scenic View” signs along Mulholland Highway pointing to this overlook, but Street View imagery shows the area to be a well-kept scenic point in Los Angeles, and we have therefore left the feature on Maps.

If you have additional official information that can enable us to further evaluate this issue, please feel free to reach out. Thanks for your consideration.

Regards,

The Google Team”

This motion was sent to Councilman Ryu’s office, with the hopes that he could spearhead the removal of the signs with DOT and no longer support the Illegal Scenic Vista as a unsupported tourist destination.  We haven’t heard any news from the office regarding this issue.  We were contacted by the Lake Hollywood Coalition with information, that they were given by DOT, that the signs were actually illegal and there were no records of this signage ever being authorized or installed by city agencies. Thus they have been removed.

I know some of you are concerned that your area may become congested with traffic, since some cars may not know where they are going, but this is hopefully a temporary situation as we are actively working with Google to provide proof that the signs have been removed and that the area is not a tourist destination.

Thank you for your support in making our neighborhood a safer place.

Best,

Tara Stephenson-Fong
HHA President
