Building Fences in Hollywoodland

Before building a fence in Hollywoodland, there are a few things you should know.  The Hollywoodland Specific Plan ( ordinance # 168.121) alters the City of Los Angeles zoning requirements for the construction of new front yard fences in our neighborhood. A building permit is required for the construction of any new fence over three (3) feet (6) six inches regardless of the type of construction*.  The Hollywoodland Specific Plan requires that no fences be constructed within the first three feet of the front yard property line.  A majority of front yard property lines in Hollywoodland do not start at the street curb.  The space between street curb and front property line varies in width depending on the width of the street.  A licensed survey will indicate the property lot lines.

Some homes have non-conforming overheight fences without setback from the curb.   These were usually “grandfathered” in prior to the adoption of the Specific Plan ( 1992).**  If you want restore and retain a “grandfathered” fence you can not remove more than 50% of the original fence.  If you do so,  the fence will be considered “new” and must follow current codes.

In addition, “no structures, including fences or walls, shall be attached to a granite wall or granite stairway when the wall or stairway is located in a public right of way.”*

Once you go beyond the first three feet of your front property line, a six foot tall perimeter fence may extend along your side or rear property lines
