Mountain lion seen on Durand Drive

On November 9, 7:00 PM residents reported the mountain lion (P-22) snatched a small dog on a leash near Creston and Durand Drive .  The incident was reported to  RAP ( Recreation and Parks),  Rangers and NPS ( National Park Service).  City agencies did not acknowledge the incident occurred, but shared information about a zoom session (11/21) on how to coexist with mountain lions.

These are some assumptions and suggestions .  The mountain lion is now 11 years old.  He is aging and may have lost some ability to hunt.  We understand the average lion consumes a deer.  While walking our rugged hills in the evening we advise residents to take note of surroundings, avoid distractions like talking on cells phones, etc., leash dogs ( avoid the expanding leashes), allow dogs to walk in front, not behind you.   If you should encounter the lion try to be loud and project your body as a large vertical form ( arms raising).

As an aside, on November 19 there was a Modesto Bee report of a mountain lion in San Luis area that chased a man on a bicycle.  This was during the day on hiking/biking trails.  The biker did not run, but made himself appear as large as possible raising his bike over his head.   Those authorities alerted the public and closed the trails out of safety for the public.
