We survived without a fire, but it was highly unpleasant for those residents among us who live at the tip top of Beachwood by the dead end. It was hazardous if you were navigating Canyon Lake Drive when both lanes were blocked for visitors’ photo ops. And if you live on Deronda, it was one more day to contemplate the tribulations of living there: this time a little boy fell while hiking and seriously injured
Resident counters counted upwards of 3000 per day pedestrians entering the narrow gate which leads to the informal but well traveled trail head which the City decided to establish a few years ago. The way we count is to count for a 5 min time span and then multiply by 12 for that hour (e.g., the noon hour). Then we add up the 8 estimated hours for the day. This gives you … the shocking, absolutely shocking, number of 3000+ pedestrians per day.
Now, many of us live off the beaten track; were we to gaze out our kitchen window to count passers-by and then “do the calc,” we might come up with around 100-150 passing by. But can you just imagine seeing scenes like this just a few feet from your nose? Another family used this curb to change a diaper. Still others just hooted and hollered and made this woman’s front walkway their walkway. The noise on this Memorial Day nearly drove her to tears — and understandably so: Can you IMAGINE 3000 passing by your window?
We must empathize – and The City must act.
